  • Partners were given a guided tour of the historic city of Vasto. Vasto is a tranquil small tourist town and seaside resort located in the south of Abruzzo, full of history, art, culture and beaches. The town is divided into two main areas: Vasto city and Vasto Marina. Vasto city sits on a hill about 150m above sea level. Vasto Marina sits on a crescent-shaped bay on the Adriatic Sea. We learnt that Vasto is a Roman town, with lots of history, such as the Castle Caldoresco, the Palazzo d'Avalos and important churches such as Cathedral of Saint Joseph and the church of Saint Mary. We visited the main square which is dedicated to Gabriele Rossetti, a poet exiled in England, born here on 28 February 1783.

  • Lunch at la Transumanza restaurant.

  • Partners were welcomed by the children who sang beautifully for us. Partners had the opportunity to talk with each other and share food whilst being entertained by DJ Fabio.

  • Partners took part in a maths activity led by teacher Giuseppe Buono. This involved working with geometrical shapes and clay. We were encouraged to think about size, shape and dimensions.

  • Partners departed to Punta Penna natural reserve. Here, we walked along the cliff, visited a lighthouse and church. We learnt of the dolphins and tortoises who visit the beach of the nature reserve and also of the many plants which grow on the cliffs.

  • Evening meal of traditional Italian food was provided at Vineria Per Passione restaurant where partners were entertained with guitar music and singing.

Meeting Minutes– 25th September 2018

·         All partners were given a guided tour of the Nursery, both indoors and outdoors.

·         Each country presented the work they had been doing in their Maths clubs.

·         Partners all took turns to visit the children working in their classrooms to observe maths taking place.

o     2 year olds- singing with a professional music teacher

o     3 year olds- bingo (matching animal pictures)

o     4 year olds- matching coloured pom-poms to coloured egg cartons, using peg for fine motor skills, finding shapes within shapes

·         Lunch at Nonsolocaffe

·         Visit to the wine factory to see how wine is made. The maths focus here was to show the sequence involved in making wine. The owner of the vineyard explained the process to us and we watched a short video.

·         Evening meal at pizzeria Le Cisterne.

Meeting Minutes-26th September 2018

A Cultural visit to Tremiti Islands had been planned but the boats were not running due to the windy weather.

·         Instead, we took a walking tour of Termoli. Termoli is a small fishing town. It has walls used for fortification in years gone by.

·         Free time to exlore the Marine harbour of Vasto. In Vasto Marina there is a statue considered to be the symbol of the beach. It represents a woman in a bikini that seems to be about to dive into the sea. The statue is 3,60 metres tall, completely made out of bronze, and it weights almost half a ton. It has been created in1979 by the sculptor Aldo D’Adamo. The statue is an homage to all the beautiful ladies that populate the beach in the summer months.

·         All partners visited the Palazzo d'Avalos. A guide explained the history of the palace.

·         Free time to choose own restaurant for evening meal.

Meeting Minutes 27th September 2018

·         Maths in the Supermarket. All partners were given a ‘maths’ shopping list and a shopping trolley and had to race to find all of the items eg. something longer than 5 metres, 3 circle objects – one small, one medium and one large, 4 sky blue objects etc.

Meeting held at Mamitas, Vasto, at 13.30 hrs on Thursday, 27th September 2018

Present: the delegates from Italy, Portugal, Latvia, Turkey and the U.K.

The meeting was hosted by Claudia Cassella, Director of the L’Alberro Azzuro Scuola dell’ Infanzia paritaria with Jaklina Bajramoska acting as interpreter.

1. Administrative matters were attended to for the week’s activities.

2. Certificates of attendance were signed by each delegate from each country for each day.

3. The register of attendance was completed and signed.

4. Preliminary thoughts as to the next meeting were outlined by Jayne Smith, U.K. Director and Headteacher at Ox Close Nursery School, Spennymoor.

5. The date for this meeting is scheduled for 25th-30th March 2019 in the U.K.

6. The theme for this session will be Technology.

7. Given the project has already met close to Oxclose Nursery it is suggested that accommodation be sought close to the regional capital city, Newcastle Upon Tyne, in order that a more diverse range of exploration and activities can be provided using the theme.

8. Discussion followed on the possibility of visiting either London or Edinburgh. Given Edinburgh is much closer to Co. Durham than London and to reduce travel costs Edinburgh is considered the better option. It is also possible for many delegates to fly into Edinburgh from their home country.

9. These suggestions are to be considered more formally at the Evaluation Meeting to be held the next day, Friday 28th September.

10. The meeting closed at 13.45hrs and after lunch was followed with “Maths by the sea” with circle time music and rhythm led by Ritme.

·         Traditional dinner at Masseia Zinni. All partners were entertained by an orchestra of musicians and took part in singing competitions and dancing. The host gave a demonstration on how to make pasta and we learnt of how the hosts are self-sufficient.

Meeting minutes 28th June 2018

·         All partners attended a meeting at the City Hall and heard a speech from Councillor Anna Bosco.

·         Certificates were presented.

·         Discussions regarding plans for the next meeting in the UK took place.

·         The visit to the UK will take place 25th March 2019 to 30th March 2019 (24th March and 31st March are travel days with 5 working project days)

·         We will aim to base the meeting in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

·         The theme of the meeting is Technology.

·         The consensus was to visit Edinburgh for the cultural visit.

Plans were made for the next groups. The activities will have a Technology focus.

1.

Each country is to start their technology groups. Partners will present their work in the UK.

Partners will record all activities carried out in their Technology groups between October 2018 and March 2019 and create a presentation for all partners in the UK.  Please keep presentations within a 10 minute time frame.

Activities to cover with the maths groups are:

·         Technology activities for the children

·         Organizing educative computer games and playing them all together.

·         Organizing web-game competitions

Other activities to be completed between visits-

·         Disseminate activities from the visit to Italy to children, staff and parents

·         Inform local newspapers of the visit

·         Complete impact analysis of Maths clubs

Project magazine for Technology

All partners to create 3 pages to go into a collective magazine.

1.     Choose a designer to present

2.     Instructions to explain how to make something

3.     Page to promote a website your children enjoy

We will need to prove the impact the project has had on our children and staff. Please could everyone write a paragraph on the impact the maths groups have had in your own school and email them to n1021.admin@durhamlearning.net by November 23rd   2018.
